University of Edinburgh to save £200k in annual energy costs with new solar farm installation

The installation of a new solar farm at a University of Edinburgh campus will help it save approximately £200,000 every year in energy bills and further support its goal to become carbon-neutral by 2040.

The five-hectare site, the equivalent of five football pitches, will consist of almost 5,000 ground-mounted panels when it is completed in November.

The project is forecast to generate more than 1,400,000kWh of electricity a year, which is enough to power 500 homes.

The University of Edinburgh has invested more than £20 million in low carbon energy in recent years, which has helped reduce its overall carbon dioxide emissions by almost 10,000 tonnes annually.

Dave Gorman, Director of Social Responsibility and Sustainability at the University of Edinburgh, said: "The solar farm at Easter Bush will not only allow us to lead the way in the practical implementation of low carbon technology but research the next generation of low carbon energy."
