Microsoft forms alliance with Shell to support progress towards net zero world

Microsoft and Shell have announced a 'strategic' alliance to accelerate progress towards a net zero world.

The partnership aims to support Shell’s ambition to be a net zero emissions energy business by 2050.

Shell’s supply of renewable energy will also help Microsoft deliver on its goal of using 100% clean power by 2025 and having a 'carbon-negative' status by 2050.

Partners have also committed to working together to advance the use of sustainable aviation fuels and develop digital tools to support customers in their mission to shrink their carbon footprint.

The two companies will also collaborate on artificial intelligence to continue contributing to the worker and onsite safety and delivering efficiencies that helped Shell in the past reduce carbon emissions from its operations.

Judson Althoff, Executive Vice President of Microsoft’s Worldwide Commercial Business, commented: "Cross-industry collaborations like this are fundamental to help society reach net zero emissions by 2050, and digital transformation is key to tackling this important issue, within the energy sector and beyond."

Huibert Vigeveno, Downstream Director of Shell, said: "Our strategic alliance will enable us to push the boundaries of what can be achieved. We believe we can unlock tremendous progress for Shell, Microsoft, our customers and beyond.”
