Walmart targets zero emissions by 2040 without carbon offsets

Retail giant Walmart has committed to reaching net zero emissions across its global operations by 2040.

The firm, which plans to become a 'regenerative company', explained this goal will be achieved without the use of carbon offsets.

The retail corporation notes it will power its facilities with 100% renewable energy by 2035, electrify its fleet and switch to low-impact refrigerants for cooling and heating in its stores, clubs and data and distribution centres by 2040.

Walmart said it will also work with its charitable arm Walmart Foundation to restore at least 50 million acres of land and one million square miles of ocean by 2030.

Doug McMillon, President and Chief Executive Officer at Walmart, said: "The commitments we’re making today not only aim to decarbonise Walmart’s global operations, but they also put us on the path to becoming a regenerative company.

"One that works to restore, renew and replenish in addition to preserving our planet and encourages others to do the same.”
