EU proposes to cut 15% more emissions by 2030

EU proposes to cut 15% more emissions by 2030

During her first landmark state union address, EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen has set out Europe's priorities for the year ahead, including an increase in targets for carbon emission reductions by 2030 from 40% to 55%.

The European Commission President noted this new target could put the EU on track for climate neutrality by 2050 and for meeting its Paris Agreement obligations.

She added: "If others follow our lead, the world will be able to keep warming below 1.5°C.

"But for us, the 2030 target is ambitious, achievable and beneficial for Europe. We can do it. We have already shown we can do it. While emissions dropped 25% since 1990, our economy grew by more than 60%."

The new target is also forecast to reduce Europe's energy import dependency, create millions of extra jobs and more than halve air pollution.

She also announced plans for a revision of all climate and energy legislation to make it 'fit for 55', on the basis of boosted support for emission trading, renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Von der Leyen also said Europe must protect lives and livelihoods amid a resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic.
