Brazilian food processing company launches carbon-neutral beef range

Brazilian food processing company Marfrig has launched a carbon-neutral beef brand.

Developed by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), carbon-neutral beef is a certification for cattle raising and covers crop, livestock and deforestation factors.

The products of the new brand come from animals raised within a sustainably integrated system, which neutralises methane emissions under a protocol developed by Embrapa.

This emission offsetting is verified through independent audits and the protocol guarantees that all animal welfare principles are maintained.

Marfrig has invested around R$10 million (£1.3m) to create the new brand.

Miguel Gularte, Marfrig's CEO, said: “By encouraging sustainable production, we create value for the company and the business chain.

"In addition, the development of carbon-neutral beef, in partnership with one of the most renowned research and innovation centres in agribusiness worldwide, Embrapa, reaffirms our commitment to four of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Agenda 2030.”
