Canadian Pacific’s Calgary headquarters to be 100% powered by solar

Canadian Pacific’s Calgary headquarters to be 100% powered by solar

Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway has launched a project to power its corporate headquarters in Calgary with 100% locally-produced renewable electricity.

The project, which will be built over five hectares, will see the installation of 500 parking stalls covered with solar panels, in addition to the creation of a solar garden - together, this infrastructure will generate up to 5MW of electricity.

This is expected to generate more power than what is consumed at CP's main headquarters building by early 2021, as well as reduce around 2,600 tonnes of carbon emissions a year, equivalent to taking around 570 cars off the road.

Keith Creel, CP President and Chief Executive Officer said: "At CP, we are sustainably driven and today's announcement further exemplifies that.

"We are taking advantage of our unique headquarters footprint in Calgary, just outside of the downtown core, to develop one of the largest private solar operations in the province. We look forward to seeing the project come on line in early 2021 and to having it featured as part of our beautiful, historic and expansive Calgary campus."

The company adds it has improved its locomotive fuel efficiency by more than 40% since 1990 through various initiatives and programmes.
