Warrington Borough Council to launch green community bond

The scheme aims to raise funds for the development of a new solar farm in Circencester

Warrington Borough Council has announced plans to launch a green community investment scheme.

The initiative aims to raise funds from people who are interested in investing as little as £5 in the council to pay for the development of a new solar farm in Circencester.

The power generated from the solar farm will be used to meet the council’s energy needs, with any surplus energy generated sold.

The project will support the council’s aims of becoming carbon-neutral by 2030 and generating an income for its essential services.

The ‘region’s first’ green scheme will open on 25th August and seeks to gather contributions of up to £1 million.

Warrington Borough Council Leader, Councillor Russ Bowden, said: “It is a really innovative way of engaging people in the work we are doing.

“It’s about engendering partnership working, building trust with communities and empowering them to play a part in creating a greener and more prosperous future.
