Ford’s micromobility arm announces bold plan to go carbon-negative by 2025

Ford Motor Company's micromobility arm Spin has pledged to reach net-negative emissions by 2025.

This would mean the company reaches a point of eliminating more carbon than it produces within the next five years - it aims to help achieve this ambitious goal by conducting an ongoing internal audit of its carbon emissions across every aspect of the business to provide a baseline understanding of its current emissions performance in terms of manufacturing, operations and energy usage.

The electric scooter rental platform says it is also working to better quantify how Spin journeys are replacing car trips in cities and calculate the resulting environmental benefits.

It promises to transition its operations to 100% plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles, switch to 100% renewable energy for recharging, integrate transport mode shift as a core company sustainability metric and deliver a minimum 24 month lifetime for Spin vehicles, as well as divert 100% of its waste away from landfill.

Shivam Vohra, Senior Program Manager of Sustainability Initiatives at Spin, said: "We have to hold ourselves accountable for tracking the carbon emitted in providing our service. This is made easier by the fact that we employ a majority of the people deploying, collecting and recharging our scooters, using Spin vans and warehouses.

"Operators relying on all gig workforces — using personal vehicles and charging at home — face a difficult challenge in accounting for these emissions. If we are truly offering a more sustainable mode of transportation to cities, we should be eliminating more carbon than we produce."

Ford intends to achieve carbon-neutrality globally by 2050.
