Nando’s considers exploring algae-based chicken feed to shrink carbon footprint

Nando's has announced it will consider exploring chicken feed alternatives in a bid to curb its carbon footprint.

The restaurant chain notes a new chicken welfare commitment will lead to further investments in research, which could potentially investigate the potential of more sustainable types of chicken feed such as that made from algae and insects.

The company, which has reduced its carbon density by 40% since 2015, has previously pledged to achieve net zero direct emissions and reduce the carbon footprint of a Nando’s meal by a further 50% by 2030.

Colin Hill, Nando’s CEO for UK and Ireland said: “Over the last four years our sustainability initiatives have significantly reduced our carbon footprint, but today we are launching ambitious new commitments which will set a strong example for what our industry can do to make a genuine difference.

"We are particularly proud, that with these targets, we will become the first in our industry to combine improvements in environmental sustainability with animal welfare.”

Andrew Stephen, CEO, The Sustainable Restaurant Association, said: "Signing up to the Better Chicken Commitment, a move that will improve the lives of millions of birds, is another significant step, and again one we trust will encourage even more businesses to follow suit.”
