SPAR supplier launches biogas-powered fleet of delivery vehicles

SPAR supplier launches biogas-powered fleet of delivery vehicles

The supplier to SPAR and EUROSPAR supermarkets in Ireland, BWG Foods has launched a fleet of biogas-powered vehicles.

The vehicles are projected to deliver a 90% reduction in transport-related carbon dioxide emissions - the first two of BWG Foods’ biogas-fuelled trucks are estimated to lead to a reduction of 200 tonnes of emissions every year.

The vehicles, which each cost €180,000, are the result of a partnership between BWG and two Irish start-ups, VisionGreen and Generation Green.

The firm has also committed to contributing food waste from its distribution centre to the biogas production site at Nurney, County Kildare, making the project a circular solution.

Joanne Mellon, Logistics Director BWG Foods, said: “It is critically important that we invest in new technologies that allow us to pioneer less carbon-intensive methods of delivery.

“We believe that biogas trucks are the answer to achieve immediate carbon reductions, as electric and hydrogen heavy goods vehicles are in their infancy and won’t be available in the Irish market for some time to come.“
