Toyota develops more environmentally-friendly electronics plating technology

Toyota has developed a more environmentally-friendly electronics plating technology.

In the new system, metal ions pass through a polymer membrane to apply plating exclusively to those areas which require plating, rather than these parts needing to be dipped.

It can be used to form copper, nickel, and other metal coatings on substrates - by eliminating the need for dipping, where parts have to be immersed in multiple baths of plating solution, it dramatically reduces the waste solution to about one-thirtieth of previous levels and carbon emissions to about one-third of previous levels.

Over the next few years, Toyota hopes to market the new equipment for use as a test machine for verification and evaluation purposes, after which time it will expand its sales to encourage more widespread use as a full production machine.

Global sales of Toyota hybrids have surpassed the 15 million-car milestone.
