Carlsberg inaugurates the ‘first brewery in the world’ to virtually eliminate water wastage

The Danish brewing giant Carlsberg has inaugurated a water recycling plant, which claims to make one of its breweries the 'first in the world' to virtually eliminate water wastage.

The new plant is estimated to halve the average water consumption at the brewery and reduce energy consumption by 10% through its biogas production and hot water recycling.

The new water recycling technology will also allow the brewery to recycle almost 90% of all process water.

Arjun Bhowmik, Vice President, Production, Western Europe, Carlsberg Group, commented: "Our focus has always been on optimizing resource management and water consumption reduction at the brewery in Fredericia has been an integral part of this drive."

Minister for Higher Education and Science Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen said: "Our ambition in the government is clear. We want to make Denmark a green and sustainable pioneer country and one of the things which means a lot to me is how we make more green research work in society."

The water recycling plant is a partnership project initiated through the public-private Danish partnership for Resource and water-efficient industrial food production.
