Carrefour adds wind energy to its Spanish stores to save 80% of energy consumption

Carrefour has decided to add wind energy to its stores in three Spanish cities to save 80% in energy consumption.

The supermarket chain has agreed to implement the project with one of the largest clean energy companies in Argentina, Central Puerto, which will see branches in Cordoba, Buenos Aires and Entre Rios to be powered using wind turbines.

The actions implemented in branches and distribution centres include replacing fluorescent lighting with LEDs and the introduction of more efficient refrigeration equipment, which consumes less energy.

A 'backhauling system', which will optimise the use of trucks with its suppliers to take advantage of the return flow to distribution centres and therefore reducing the number of kilometres covered, will also be deployed in the branches.

As part of its global commitment, Carrefour Group aims to bring about a 30% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and a 55% reduction by 2040.
