Eni partners up to build new plastic waste-to-gas plant

Italian oil and gas company Eni and NextChem, the Maire Tecnimont Group’s subsidiary for green chemistry, have partnered for a new circular technologies project. The new plastic waste-to-gas plant will be built within Eni's refinery in Taranto, South Italy.

The facility will be added to a portfolio of others including the waste-to-hydrogen production plant in Venice and the waste-to-methanol production plant in Livorno, Tuscany.

The three plants will use NextChem’s technology for the chemical recycling of plastic waste and dry waste.

The gas produced could be used to decarbonise the steel industry.

The project is part of Eni's decarbonisation strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% by 2050.
