NKT runs all power cable factories with renewables saving 48,000 tonnes of CO2

Power cable supplier NKT is now powering its power cable manufacturing with electricity from renewable energy.

This switch is expected to reduce its energy consumption-related carbon dioxide emissions by 66%, a saving of 48k tonnes every year, which is the equivalent of the annual electricity use of more than eight thousand homes.

The firm says it has made the change by entering agreements with local utilities to ensure certificates are in place to verify the power supply originates from renewable sources for its sites in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Alexander Kara, President and CEO of NKT, said: "We are taking our responsibility seriously as a key contributor to the infrastructure needed for the green transformation.

"Running our manufacturing on green electricity is yet another milestone in our ambition to reduce our carbon footprint to ensure that the development of the global power grids is based on the technologies with the lowest environmental footprint possible."

The company has taken several green initiatives including the recycling of metals from the production of power cables to increase the energy efficiency of its cable manufacturing.
