Finnish healthy food group powers mill with oat flakes to curb emissions and save energy costs

Finnish healthy food group Raisio Group is building a new heating plant at a mill it owns in the town of Nokia, powered by oat flakes.

The firm says the installation of the new project will not only make the site carbon-neutral but also reduce energy costs - when side streams like oat husk are used in energy production, energy costs are reduced.

In addition, energy production utilising side streams as fuel, increases energy self-sufficiency and the facility is not dependent on changes in fuel prices.

The mill’s energy production currently emits about 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year and with the new plant, emissions are expected to drop to zero.

The company has partnered with energy and water company, Adven to implement the system, the construction of which will begin at the end of this year.

Jukka Heinänen, Chief Operating Officer, Healthy Ingredients Unit and Operations at Raisio Group, said: "Our goal is to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy always when ecologically and economically viable. In this case, the new heating plant will also bring us cost savings."

Elli Ikonen, Account Manager at Adven, says: “There is a clear trend that the by-products generated in production are used in energy production, which favours local circular economy in an excellent way."

Energy solutions are a key part of Raisio's responsibility programme, which aims for carbon neutrality in production by the end of 2023.
