Swedish pharmacy chain replaces plastic dispensing products with renewable alternative

One of the largest pharmacy chains in Sweden will replace medicine dispensing aid products, such as medical cups and syringes, to a more environmentally friendly alternative made from recyclable bioplastic.

The new bioplastic products, introduced by Kronans Apotek pharmacies, are manufactured in Sweden and will replace the current plastic products that are imported from China.

The initiative is expected to cut further the environmental impact, as it means shorter transport and less cost for the products.

In May, the company also started to replace plastic bags with paper in all its 300 pharmacies, move which is expected to decrease 55 tonnes of plastic usage every year.

In 2019, pharmacies sold 10 million fewer plastic bags than in 2016 and the plastic bags have been partly manufactured from recycled plastic.
