Swedish police to be stationed in ‘world’s first climate-neutral police building’

Swedish police to be stationed in ‘world’s first climate-neutral police building’

Sweden will soon become home to what claims to be 'world's first climate-neutral police building'.

The new building of the Swedish Police Authority will be constructed entirely of wood with an objective of net zero carbon dioxide emissions throughout its lifetime.

Climate-neutrality of the project will be achieved by building the structures in wood instead of the traditional steel and concrete - the use of wood means that emissions will be 40% lower compared with conventional construction techniques.

Sun panels on the roof will also cover the building's energy requirements and the community will use the excess energy.

The project, which will be constructed by the Swedish property developer Castellum, is estimated to cost £19 million and result in an annual income of £1.2 million.

Niclas Hallgren, Deputy Regional Police Chief in Bergslagen, commented: “The new police station makes us better equipped for the future. Workplace environment will be improved for our staff, and ultimately this will also benefit our fellow citizens. It feels extra great that the new premises will create minimal impact on the environment."

Henrik Saxborn, CEO at Castellum AB, said: "We’re now taking a major step in the right direction to build more climate-smart while we contribute to a more sustainable community."
