Finnish food company Paulig plans to transport its goods in carbon-neutral pallets.

The plan will allow the company to use pallets which are 100% sourced from sustainable forests.

This will reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and the firm will buy carbon credits to support a water infrastructure project in sub-Saharan Africa to offset the remaining carbon dioxide emissions.

With the new pallets, Paulig is forecast to reduce its emissions by more than 2,000 tonnes every year and save about 1,400 trees.

The switch is also predicted to lead to a waste reduction of around 145 tonnes, which is the equivalent of more than 13.2 million paper cups a year.

Switching to carbon-neutral pallets contributes to Paulig’s climate target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% in its value chain by 2030.

Terhi Liukkonen, Paulig's Head of Indirect Sourcing, said: "This collaboration with CHEP makes Paulig the first company in Finland to use carbon-neutral pallets in its operations.

"We share the values around sustainability and our collaboration will drive the sustainable movement of materials and food products."

Annually, Paulig transports about one and a half million pallets of coffee, spices and food products in Europe, of which about 70% will be carbon-neutral pallets in the future.
