UK’s gas networks call on government to unlock £900m green hydrogen investment

Britain’s five gas network companies have called on the government to unlock more than £900 million of new investment in green gas network infrastructure as part of its post-Covid-19 recovery.

The group, whose members include Cadent, National Grid and Wales and West Utilities, wants the government to fund the development of the 'world's first zero-carbon gas grid' in the UK.

The gas grid's switchover from methane natural gas to zero-carbon hydrogen and biomethane is expected to help British billpayers save £89 billion by 2050.

Chris Train, UK’s Green Gas Champion, said: “The need for action from the government has never been greater.

"Investing in the infrastructure that will ensure that homes and businesses across the country are connected to the world’s first zero-carbon gas grid is one of the best ways of not only meeting our decarbonisation targets but also for ensuring that our economic recovery from the Covid-19 crisis is first and foremost a clean, green one."
