Scottish dairy company to power factory with cheese waste

A Scottish dairy company, Graham's The Family Dairy, plans to power its production facility in Fife using waste from cheese.

The low carbon plant will use waste whey to supply 80% of the site’s baseload electricity and 50% of its boiler gas needs through a closed pipe network.

The 'first for Scotland's dairy industry' project is expected to be operational by the spring of 2021.

Robert Graham, Managing Director, Graham’s The Family Dairy, said: "Building a sustainable environment for our next generation is incredibly important to our family. We are actively working to achieve net zero carbon across every area of our business.

"The dairy sector has the potential to lead in the transition to a net zero carbon economy, particularly within the areas of heat and transport."

The project forms part of the Scotland's Low Carbon Innovation Transition Programme (LCITP) and was awarded grant support in 2020.
