Swiss police trials hydrogen-powered car

The Zurich police service has started a trial of a hydrogen-powered car in a bid to slash its carbon dioxide emissions.

The Swiss force has begun using the Hyundai Nexo, which is equipped with many features; including a signalling system, an accident memory recording drive and a location system with a direct connection to the operation centre.

The police department says it is the first hydrogen-powered vehicle to meet the basic requirements for a traffic police vehicle.

The Nexo is the latest low carbon car to be tried out by Zurich police. They have a long history of sustainable transport going back to 2003, when they used a gas-powered car.

By the end of 2020, a fifth of its fleet will be low carbon cars.
