New consortium to launch ‘world’s first zero-emission electric tankers’

A new consortium of seven companies including Asahi Tanker, Mitsubishi Corporation, Exeno Yamamizu Corporation and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has announced plans to launch the 'world’s first zero-emission electric tankers'.

They plan to develop a pair of electric vessels that will be powered by large-capacity lithium-ion batteries and will adopt automated and digitalised functions that will reduce crew workload.

In a joint announcement, the 'e5 Consortium', a name that illustrates its five core principles, electrification, environment, evolution, efficiency and economics, says the partnership will aim to help Japan curb its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to the nation's social and economic development.

The project is expected to be completed in March 2022.
