Four cities call on European Commission for multi-billion euro green transport scheme

Four cities call on European Commission for multi-billion euro green transport scheme

Local authorities in Dublin, Bonn, Milan and Brussels have sent a letter to European Commission calling for a multi-billion euro grant-funded green transport scheme.

The initiative would support zero-emission buses, refuse collection tracks, municipal vans and the building of the required charging infrastructure.

The joint letter addressed to EU Climate Chief, Frans Timmermans and Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean, says the €3.5bn recovery package should also include financial support for zero-emission vehicles used as taxis, for ride-hailing, car-sharing and boost cycling and public e-bike fleets.

The European cities also suggest the grant system should be made available immediately, so that cities will be able to construct permanent safe cycling infrastructure and widen footpaths as soon as possible.
