Ealing Council unveils climate emergency plan

Ealing Council has unveiled a new climate emergency plan with steps that could help the borough meet its 2030 carbon-neutrality goal.

The plan aims to tackle carbon reduction from a number of key areas, including transport, energy, local green economy and infrastructure.

The local authority plans to create 2,500 affordable and energy-efficient homes by 2022 and run an extensive programme of retrofitting to improve the energy performance of existing buildings.

The council's green transport goal will be supported by 130 on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging points already in existence, with plans to deploy more soon.

Going forward, the council has also rolled out an engagement plan working with residents, businesses and young people to share best practice, help businesses build the ‘green economy’ and to develop a joint approach to dealing with the climate emergency.

Julian Bell, Leader of Ealing Council, said: "We are committed to treat climate change as a crisis, where we need a swift, decisive and large response to tackle it.

"Acting now on climate change will dramatically improve the council’s environmental performance and protect residents from the impacts of climate change in the future.

"We are currently enjoying much better air quality as a result of the lockdown and it is an ideal opportunity to build on this and continue with walking and cycling and keep our cars parked on the driveways."
