Volvo to accelerate Belgian public transport’s green energy transition with 128 hybrid buses

Volvo has announced it has received an order from the Brussels' public transport company for 128 hybrid buses.

The Swedish manufacturer said it would supply its Volvo 7900 Hybrid buses, which run on electricity up to speeds of 20 kilometres an hour, to the Belgian capital's public transport system, adding to the 110 buses it has already delivered under an agreement made in 2018.

The new buses which have 50% lower particle and nitrogen oxide emissions than the diesel models, will be delivered in 2021.

Håkan Agnevall, President of Volvo Buses, said: "Our hybrid buses is an important and versatile tool in the toolbox that is needed to create a sustainable and attractive urban transport system of the future."

Renaud de Saint Moulin, Senior Vice President, Transport Systems at STIB-MIVB, commented: "The bus network in Brussels is developing rapidly along two complementary axes - energy transition at one hand and a major redesign of our routes as to further increase the public transport offer by almost 30% in a few months of time.

"The Volvo hybrid fleet is a major building block that enables STIB to leverage in this double challenge."
