Northumberland County Council to invest £730k in green tech upgrades

Northumberland County Council has agreed to make a £730,000 investment in new green installations at the former Lindisfarne school site in Alnwick.

The work will see solar power systems and a ground source heat pump installed on the site, which is being redeveloped into a modern adult learning centre and community campus.

The ground source heat pump system, which has already been installed in some of the county’s buildings, involves pipes being buried underground to extract warmth from the ground.

The energy is then used to heat water and heating systems in a building.

Glen Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Local Services, said: “This is another exciting example of the work we are doing across Northumberland to reduce our county's carbon footprint.

"Our significant investment, which highlights our commitment to countering climate change, will provide a renewable energy source to the campus and bring us closer to being a carbon-neutral county.”
