Mondelēz bins almost 65k tonnes of packaging waste using recyclable alternatives

Mondelēz has binned almost 65,000 tonnes of packaging waste by applying recyclable alternatives to 93% of its products.

That's according to its annual sustainability report, which suggests that this action helped the international food giant to save $87 million (£70m).

The company also reported a 15% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, a 21% drop in waste across manufacturing operations and a 27% decrease in water usage in regions where the resource is most scarce.

It says the firm has also sourced 63% of the volume of cocoa needed for its global chocolate brands through the Cocoa Life programme and 65% of wheat from the Harmony Wheat project.

Mondelez’s long-term goals include sourcing only sustainable cocoa by 2025, using sustainably sourced wheat for its biscuits in Europe by 2022 and deploying child labour monitoring and remediation in all Cocoa Life communities in West Africa by 2025.

Christine Montenegro McGrath, Vice President and Chief of Impact, Sustainability and Well-being at Mondelez International, said: “We know consumers are increasingly aware of the impact their choices have on the world and what the companies behind those products stand for.

“We believe in making our snacks the right way, which means to both create a future in which people and planet thrive and to stand up for what we believe in. Today’s release of our Snacking Made Right report is an important step forward as we continue to demonstrate our progress on that journey.”
