University of Pennsylvania moves a step closer to becoming carbon neutral by 2042

The University of Pennsylvania has signed a Power Purchase Agreement to develop two solar energy facilities, boasting a total capacity of 220MW.

The solar projects aim to help the university achieve its 2042 target of becoming 100% carbon neutral - they are expected to be able to supply 75% of the campus' power requirements, as well as those of the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

The project is expected to reduce campus carbon emissions by 45% and is forecast to help the university meet its Paris Agreement obligations seven years early.

Construction on the new project is scheduled to begin by 2021, with operations commencing two years later.
