VW to produce fast EV charging stations in China

Volkswagen Group Components has teamed up with startup Shanghai DU-POWER New Energy Technical to produce flexible, quick charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) in China.

The production of the charging stations, which could charge EVs up to 150kW, is currently scheduled to start in the second half of 2020.

The carmaker says the flexible rapid charging stations can be installed almost anywhere they are needed and suggests when connected to the low voltage grid, stations could become permanent charging points, without the additional cost required for a comparable fixed quick charging station.

The built-in battery pack can store a buffer of energy, meaning that it can be disconnected from the grid temporarily and still continue to work.

To ensure the sustainable use of valuable resources, the charging station is also designed to be able to use old batteries from EVs.

Thomas Schmall, CEO of Volkswagen Group Components, said: “A comprehensive charging infrastructure is the key to the success of EVs. The planned joint venture with DU-POWER therefore represents a significant milestone as we continue to make progress along the path to electric mobility.”
