Malta launches ‘green revolution’ to transform urban spaces

Malta will soon see a number of its localities transformed into greener areas, as a result of an initiative by the Ministry for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning.

The first phase of this programme, which aims to improve the environment where people live and work, provide cleaner air and have a beneficial impact on the community as well as native fauna, involves the implementation of greening projects by local councils using funds provided by the Ministry.

Main priorities for this development will be areas such as streets, squares and other public spaces which are devoid of greenery.

The green spaces, which will be selected by the local authorities will contain species of plants that align with the landscaping guidelines and climate conditions.

Aaron Farrugia, Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning, said: “While it is all well and good to have zones in more rural areas where families can visit, we need to make sure that green zones are also present at the heart of our localities. This is just the beginning. We are looking towards a green revolution in the country.

"These projects are the first step towards the holistic vision for the environment sector and I am committed to continue working towards a shift in mentality in this regard.”
