Exeter City Futures unveils net zero plan for 2030

Exeter City Futures, a community interest company, has announced plans to present a net zero 2030 plan to Exeter's Council.

The group says the plan could save 53,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions if 100% of Exeter’s electricity was generated from clean sources and an additional 140,000 tonnes of carbon savings if Exeter were to exploit its maximum potential for renewable generation.

Practical actions that will enable the city to be net zero by 2030 include the commitment of all local organisations to energy reduction measures.

Building insulation and local planning policy would be upgraded to require the highest energy efficiency standards in all new domestic, industrial, commercial and public buildings.

In addition, the implementation of 'smart energy technology' in all homes across Exeter is expected to support the efficient use of energy, particularly from sustainable sources and support the elimination of fuel poverty.

The plan also says local authorities need to launch a city-wide low carbon mobility scheme, supported by integrated multi-modal ticketing and encourage all Exeter businesses to implement sustainable travel initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint.
