Royal College of Psychiatrists divests from fossil fuels

The Royal College of Psychiatrists has divested its multi-million-pound investment portfolio from fossil fuels.

The organisation has also suggested while it is a "necessary" move, divesting from fossil fuels "does not go far enough".

Going forward, it has committed to only invest in companies that follow "good environmental, social and governance policies and practices", such as businesses working to reduce their waste, support local communities and promote diversity and equality in their workforce.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists also does not invest in tobacco, weaponry, adult entertainment, alcohol and gambling companies

Dr Eleanor Cooke, a representative from Fossil Free Psych, a group of doctors and members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said: “We are delighted that our college has made this decision to divest from fossil fuels, given the profound impacts of climate change and air pollution on mental health.

“We believe it is unethical and unacceptable for any organisation that aims to improve health to be invested in this industry."
