Investec reaches carbon neutrality

International banking and asset management group Investec has announced it has achieved carbon neutrality through a combination of direct emissions savings and carbon offsets.

The firm, which says it is committed to net zero carbon emissions going forward, generates 70% of its total emissions arise in South Africa - the majority of these derive from energy consumption.

Investec says it has "serious intent in making the complex transition to a cleaner world" and notes it has already reduced its emissions per employee by 55% over the last decade, while average headcount increased 105%.

In South Africa, Investec has partnered with the Climate Neutral Group in support of the Joburg Waste to Energy offset project, which captures methane from five landfills sites in Johannesburg and turns it into electricity.

Fani Titi, Joint CEO of Investec Group, said: "Taking action on climate and publicly committing to net zero, recognises the limits of our planet.

"Being carbon neutral is vital to the fortunes of future generations and reflects the leading role Investec wants to play in the wellbeing of our communities."
