Durham University channels investment into natural disaster research institute

Durham University has announced a major investment for its natural disaster research institute as part of a record £7.5 million alumni donation.

The donation from alumnus Charles Wilson and his partner Dr Rowena Olegario will be used to enhance the Institute of Hazard Risk and Resilience (IHRR), which supports research and practice into natural disasters.

The frequency and severity of extreme natural events that pose damage to human health and economies are expected to worsen as climate change continues into the future.

Professor Louise Bracken, Wilson Chair of Hazard and Risk within the IHRR, Durham University, said: "When our environment suddenly turns dangerous, thousands of lives and communities can be put at risk in seconds.

"We will use this new funding to translate our research and expertise into practice to help and give hope to some of those most vulnerable communities around the world."
