Electric bus builder VDL Bus & Coach introduces lightweight battery pack

Electric bus builder VDL Bus & Coach has announced the introduction of a new battery pack it says will increase the range of its clean vehicles.

The first orders for the 'High Energy' batteries have already been received - there are 315kWh, 350kWh, 420kWh and 525kWh options available.

The firm says the battery packs are lighter than other batteries, which when combined with their larger capacity, allows the buses to travel for longer on a single charge.

The company's Electric Citeas currently cover more than 130,000 kilometres every day across Europe and have driven a total of 50 million kilometres, saving seven million kilogrammes of carbon dioxide emissions.

The company is now planning on opening a new climate-neutral factory in Roeselare.

Henk Coppens, CEO of VDL Bus & Coach, said: “Our next steps in terms of further development are the further optimisation of energy consumption and the application of the next generations of batteries.

"In addition to the many operations that use fast charging, we also see the market’s need for greater range, especially now that more and more regional operations are also being electrified."
