E.ON has bought carbon offsetting certificates to account for the environmental impact generated by a successful YouTube video on its channel.
A film created by the energy company about 'the world's greenest data centre' has attracted around five and a half million views at the time of writing, meaning energy-intensive data centres have had to supply this amount of playback, generating emissions in the process.
E.ON originally offset around three million views-worth of data centre carbon emissions caused by playing the video - it then bought additional carbon dioxide certificates to allow the film to be viewed up to five million times in a climate-neutral manner.
This figure has again been exceeded, meaning the company will need to purchase additional certificates if it wants to ensure the video remains 100% carbon-neutral.
At the start of this year, tech giant Google announced it is to power a new data centre in Nevada in the USA with the help of ‘the world’s largest corporate solar and battery project’.
