Hyundai and US Energy Department explore wide scale Hydrogen fuelling trial

Car maker Hyundai has started a project with the US Energy Department (DOE), looking into the performance, fuelling and scaling of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

The partnership is looking into the pitfalls of fuelling infrastructure, exploring the science of fuel cell development and the use and management of data associated with such a network.

As part of the collaboration Hyundai will provide five Hyundai NEXO fuel cell vehicles to DOE and support the installation of a 'SimpleFuel' unit, an American-made, small-scale hydrogen fueling system. They will operate in the Washington DC area from the autumn.

Under Secretary of Energy Mark W. Menezes said: “The Trump Administration is committed to utilising every source of energy to ensure America’s transportation needs and challenges are aptly met and resolved.

“To meet this commitment, it is essential that we collaborate with industry. We are pleased to partner with Hyundai to help advance fuel cell and hydrogen technologies and ensure our nation’s sustainable transportation future.”

The US has been seen as shifting to the right under Trump and backing the fossil fuel lobby but this project shows a wider realisation of the need for further options when it comes to transport. Indeed the SimpleFuel system was a product of a DOE competition, asking innovators to create small-scale hydrogen generation systems to refuel forklifts or vehicles at community centres, businesses and other locations.

Hyundai Vice Chairman Euisun Chung added: “With the potential for application across multiple industries, we firmly believe that hydrogen fuel cells are necessary for a sustainable future. We are delighted that our technologies can help the U.S. Department of Energy as it continues to explore the future potential of hydrogen.”
