Packaging giant SIG to cut emissions by 60% by 2030

Packaging giant SIG has set a new target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60% by 2030.

The firm claims to be one of the first in its industry to have such a goal approved by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

It claims its aseptic beverage cartons already have a 28% to 70% lower carbon footprint than alternative packaging, such as plastic and glass bottles, pouches and cans.

Ian Wood, Chief Supply Chain Officer at SIG, said: "It’s clear the world urgently needs to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to tackle the harmful effects of climate change.

"SIG’s stretching new target will accelerate climate action to dramatically cut our emissions and enhance our contribution to a lower-carbon food supply system."

SIG has already switched to 100% renewable electricity for global production and is exploring opportunities to expand on-site renewables as part of its journey towards net zero.
