UK designer brand releases its first fully sustainable bag

UK designer brand releases its first fully sustainable bag

The Portobello bag from Mulberry is the company’s first fully sustainable tote. It’s manufactured with heavy grain leather from a gold-rated tannery and the material is a by-product of food production. This gold standard rating, says Mulberry, has been awarded by the internationally recognised Leather Working Group based on the environmental operations and output of the tannery.

The bags will be made in Somerset at the firm’s carbon neutral factories.

Like many fashion brands, Mulberry is on a mission to reduce its carbon footprint, following criticism of the industry’s impact on the environment. It’s  launched Mulberry Green which it says focuses ‘on creating a positive change and a sustainable legacy through the care and attention it takes in designing, sourcing and manufacturing each collection.’

The brand offers a lifetime restoration service which allows customers to revive, rather than replace, a bag. Thierry Andretta, Mulberry  Chief Executive said: “I am delighted to oversee the creation of Mulberry’s first completely sustainable bag. Through our Mulberry Green responsibility commitments, we are continuing our innovative approach towards design and manufacturing in a conscientious way, ensuring we will provide truly luxury, truly responsible products for our customers.”
