OptumRx has introduced fully sustainable packaging for the delivery of medications to homes across the US.
It has scrapped the use of polystyrene, or foam, commonly used in medication home delivery and replaced it with 100% renewable cotton that is biodegradable, compostable, reusable and recyclable.
Using the new packaging to deliver around four million temperature-sensitive prescriptions to households every year is expected to save nearly two million pounds of CO2, 17 million gallons of water and four million kWh of energy.
Jon Mahrt, Chief of Operations at OptumRx said: "At OptumRx, our priority is ensuring people get the high-quality medications they need, when they need them.
"Our new packaging ensures each shipment maintains the highest standard of quality and effectiveness, while reducing the environmental footprint of our medication home delivery services."
