Kroger and Infarm partner to grow crops in grocery stores

Kroger, the largest grocery retailer in the US, has partnered with urban farming network Infarm to bring modular vertical farming to supermarkets across the country.

They suggest it is the first deal of its kind in the US and say the 'living produce farms' will launch at two store locations in Bellevue and Kirkland, Washington, later this month.

The companies will use hydroponic technology to grow the produce onsite, removing the need for extended transportation and storage and allowing shoppers to get access to fresh and sustainable produce.

Suzy Monford, Kroger's Group Vice President of Fresh, said: "Our partnership with Infarm allows us to innovate by combining ground-breaking in-store farming technology with our passion for fresh, local produce and ecological sourcing.

"Kroger is excited to be first to market and offer the best of the season and we're proud to lead the US on this journey."
