Skanska UK pledges to become carbon neutral by 2045

Construction and property development giant Skanska has committed to becoming a carbon neutral business in the UK by 2045.

That means it intends to reduce its carbon emissions across its UK portfolio of projects to zero, including both direct and supply chain emissions.

The company also aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 against 2010 levels and reduce its carbon intensity to 130 tonnes per £1 million of revenue, from a level of 351 in 2010.

Gregor Craig, President and CEO of Skanska UK said: “What makes these targets different is they all include the emissions produced by the whole of our supply chain, from their work on our projects.

“We think that’s really important. The construction industry is different to other sectors. You’ve got to look at emissions produced by sub-contractors and suppliers during construction and maintenance. If you only look at your own direct emissions, you don’t get a true picture. Without that bigger picture, you can’t set the right strategy to deal with the emissions created.”

Skanska UK added it will publish estimates, showing the total emissions of the supply chain on its projects, from 2010 to 2018 - and annually following that.
