Businesses offered share of £3.5m to bring rail sector on low carbon track
Businesses are being offered a share of £3.5 million to demonstrate new technologies that can help reduce carbon on the railways.
Innovate UK, which is running the competition on behalf of the Department for Transport, is seeking for well-developed innovations that are ready to be tested in an environment with railway customers and industry.
The competition has two themes, the first of which is looking at reducing the carbon footprint of railways across stations and infrastructure.
Projects should focus on building stations with a zero-carbon footprint, improving air quality in stations and across the network, reducing noise and pollution, finding alternatives to fossil fuels, batteries or dual power systems or supporting cheaper electrification and making better use of energy generation and storage.
The second is inviting projects that use innovative technologies to build a “station of the future” that improves passenger experience.
Funding is being provided for integration and direct testing and projects must reduce both carbon emissions and costs by 50% while improving customer experience.
The competition will open on 8th October and the deadline for registration is 21st November 2018.
