US nuclear fission startup loses its spark

A US nuclear fission startup is to shut down its operations.

Transatomic Power has announced it doesn’t see a viable path to bringing its molten salt reactor designs to scale.

However, it will make its intellectual property available so other private, public or nonprofit parties will be able to carry on with its work.

The firm is working with the US Department of Energy to open its work to the public domain, including the research and development conducted with national laboratories, as well as the patents on its zirconium hydride-based molten salt reactors.

Leslie Dewan, Transatomic’s CEO and Co-Founder, said: "We haven’t been able to scale up the company rapidly enough to build our reactor in a reasonable timeframe.

"It is therefore with a heavy heart that I must announce that Transatomic Power is suspending operations."
