New aerospace funding aims to see smart, clean plane tech take to the skies.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and Innovate UK have announced £8 million of new funding to develop new civil aerospace technologies.

Organisations can now submit their interest in two competitions, worth up to £2 million each.

One will focus on fast-track collaborative research and development projects, looking at how smart vehicle systems could help deal with harsh environments, improve efficiency and increase monitoring.

These projects are expected to be worth between £425,000 to £1 million and to last up to two years.

The other competition will focus on longer collaborative research and development projects over a five-year period, with themes including machines and electronics allowing for more electric aircraft and the development of next generation materials and processes.

These projects are expected to range in size from £425,000 to £1.5 million and to last up to three years.

A further £4 million will be on offer for feasibility studies in a competition to be run in 2019.

The competition is now open, with the deadline for expressions of interest at midday on the 5th of December, 2018.
