Suzuki to test prototype EVs for Indian market this year

Suzuki has announced it is to start testing electric vehicle (EV) prototypes for the Indian market by October.

It plans to trial around 50 prototypes, with the eventual aim of launching them across the country by 2020, in collaboration with Toyota.

The carmaker also hopes to begin lithium-ion battery production at one of its facilities in western India from 2020 onwards.

It says that for EVs to become popular in India, the government must proactively assist with improving the accessibility of well-developed charging infrastructure.

Suzuki believes India will also need to introduce hybrid and compressed natural gas vehicles if it is to overcome environmental challenges such as reducing air pollution.

Chairman Osamu Suzuki said: “We will start road-running tests using a fleet of 50 EV prototype vehicles in India from next month in order to develop safe and easy-to-use EVs for Indian customers."

The Indian Government has a plan to electrify all new vehicles by 2030.
