Ireland awards €8m for innovative energy research

A total of 45 innovative energy research projects in Ireland have been granted a share of €8 million (£7.2m) of funding.

Some of the projects include investigating the effectiveness of ventilation systems in A-rated energy efficient homes, employing artificial intelligence (AI) to optimise the forecasting ability of renewable energy producers and developing a model for regional anaerobic digestion (AD) clusters.

They range in duration from one to four years and are part of the government’s ambition to develop solutions to help homes, businesses and communities deliver a cleaner energy future.

Organisations that will share the funding include SSE Airtricity, Teagasc, University College Dublin, Gas Networks Ireland and the Centre for Advanced Data Analytics Research.

Jim Gannon, CEO of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) said: “New solutions and new technologies are central to achieving a sustainable energy future for Ireland.

“With direct involvement from industry, academia and local enterprises, the 45 projects we are funding will deliver real solutions to problems that the energy sector is facing today. These projects will facilitate innovation in the energy market, inform policy and develop the technical solutions we need to create a thriving and efficient clean energy sector.”
