M&S to swap plastic cutlery for wood alternatives

M&S is swapping plastic cutlery in its cafes with bamboo alternatives to cut down on non-biodegradable waste.

The grocery giant currently gives away 75 million plastic forks, spoons and knives every year, many of which contribute to plastic waste ending up in landfill or the environment.

It plans to start the scheme early next year, after using up its remaining plastic cutlery stocks.

Mike Barry, Sustainable Business Director at M&S, said: "We’re passionate about cutting out the unnecessary use of plastic and helping our customers reuse and recycle more,”

Pret A Manger has committed to introducing a new line of sustainable cutlery that can be composted once used.
