Canadian firm Emera pulls support from tidal energy project

Canadian energy company Emera has pulled the plug on a tidal energy project with OpenHydro.

It comes after the latter firm, based in Dublin, filed for liquidation last month.

Emera was a minority investor in Cape Sharp Tidal and said there is no further value in pursuing the project without the developer of the technology.

The companies had successfully connected a 2MW turbine to Nova Scotia’s electricity grid last month, following improvements to the operational efficiency and environmental monitoring programme.

The deployment was part of a two-turbine, 4MW demonstration project at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) site in the Minas Passage.

However, Emera stated: “Without support from the technology developer, OpenHydro, to operate and maintain the technology and the turbine, we do not believe that there is further value in pursuing this project for our business.”

The firm added it intends to continue to support other tidal energy projects.
